Shane van Gisbergen will be the last man out on-track for this afternoon's ARMOR ALL Top 10 Shootout after putting the TEKNO Commodore on provisional pole at the Sydney NRMA 500.

Van Gisbergen is on the hunt for second in the Championship after leap-frogging Craig Lowndes yesterday, and trails Mark Winterbottom by 87 points.

Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander was second in the 20-minute session, just 0.33sec behind the quick kiwi's 1min27.905 lap.

Champion elect Jamie Whincup was fourth, jumping into the 10 in the closing seconds, with David Reynolds, Mark Winterbottom, Scott Pye, Scott McLaughlin, Chaz Mostert, Rick Kelly and James Courtney making the cut.

The group sees four of five manufacturers in the shootout, with Erebus the only team to miss out after Will Davison scored pole yesterday.

Others to note outside the top 10 include both BJR cars, Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright 11 and 12th, and Craig Lowndes 18th.

Lowndes is still suffering from soreness after a big hit in qualifying yesterday.

Returning star Marcos Ambrose will start the race from 23rd.
