Record-breaking podium targets Supercars title

The next generation has arrived in 2023, and with it came a new record in Perth — where all three underlined their ambition to win the championship.

Broc Feeney led home Erebus Motorsport teammates Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki in the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint finale.

At an average age of 23 years, and 234 days, the Race 9 podium was the youngest in Supercars history, per V8 Sleuth.

Two of the drivers – race winner Feeney and third-placed Kostecki – were also part of the fourth-youngest top three, at Albert Park last month.

The Race 9 podium took the record from Adelaide 2006, when Jamie Whincup beat Kelly brothers Todd and Rick.

Feeney had already created history this season when he claimed pole in Melbourne, becoming the youngest-ever Supercars pole-sitter.

The 20-year-old undercut Zak Best’s record set as a wildcard in 2022, with Best undercutting Scott McLaughlin’s record set in 2014.

Adelaide 2006, the previous-youngest podium

Last year, Feeney also became the youngest driver to win the Adelaide 500, and the second-youngest driver after McLaughlin to win a race.

McLaughlin and Chaz Mostert combine, along with Fabian Coulthard, as the fifth-youngest podium in Perth 2014.

With two wins under his belt already in 2023, Feeney’s ambition was simple: “I want to win a Supercars championship”.

Earlier, he said: "I do believe that myself, we have a shot. The biggest thing is being consistent, because the Erebus boys have been."

Brown was 23 when he claimed his first pole and win, both at Sydney Motorsport Park, in 2021.

Championship leader Kostecki turned 25 last November, and leads the championship by 100 points over Walkinshaw Andretti United star Mostert.

Kostecki is now in the box seat to become the youngest champion since McLaughlin in 2018.

Current champion Shane van Gisbergen debuted as an 18-year-old in 2007, and won his first title at 27 in 2016.

Van Gisbergen has won 47 races — including two Bathursts — and two championships since turning 30.

Feeney is clocking up youngest-ever records

The Kiwi has signed a new deal through to at least the end of 2024, and few would doubt he would add to his tally.

McLaughlin won three titles, a Bathurst and 56 races by age 27 before leaving for IndyCar.

While the lure of international series is ever-present, Brown reiterated that he wants to score a Supercars title before he even entertains a move elsewhere.

“We’re all pretty young, we’d all say the same — we want to win a Supercars championship,” said Brown, who with Kostecki, is contracted to the end of 2024.

“I had that in all my junior divisions — I didn’t want to move on until I won the championship.

“Supercars is the highest level in Australian motorsport."

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint on May 19-21.
