Gen3 testing has commenced at Symmons Plains with some of the Repco Supercars Championship’s leading drivers.

The prototypes first hit the Tasmanian circuit on Friday with Marcos Ambrose and Garth Tander behind the wheel.

Ambrose and Tander conducted a shakedown and passenger laps during the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint.

The prototypes will be lapping the Launceston venue on Monday and Tuesday.

Symmons Plains joins Mount Panorama and Queensland Raceway as one of three circuits to have hosted Gen3 laps.

Tander and Mark Winterbottom will drive the Chevrolet Camaro on Monday.

Series leader Shane van Gisbergen, who won all three races in Tasmania, will also return to the seat of the Camaro.

Van Gisbergen turned laps in the revamped car on Friday morning.

The Camaro will be in the hands of young Brad Jones Racing duo Bryce Fullwood and Jack Smith on Tuesday.

Neither driver has previously driven the car.

Tickford Racing duo Cameron Waters and James Courtney will complete running in the Ford Mustang on Monday.

Grove Racing teammates David Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth will test on Tuesday.

Ambrose gives Gen3 'big tick'

Of the four drivers, only Courtney has previously driven the Mustang prototype.

The Gen3 Mustang received the tick of approval from Ambrose, who has now driven all generations of car since Project Blueprint.

"There's plenty of speed in the car," the two-time champion explained.

"It was pretty exciting to see the car go that hard so quickly.

"I was very comfortable in the car, so they've sorted out the ergonomic issues.

"The power felt old school V8 to me, it felt old school Supercar to me. It was great."

Prototype testing will move to Phillip Island in April following the next round at Albert Park.
