David Reynolds has powered to ARMOR ALL Pole Position in a thrilling Gold Coast Shootout.

Reynolds secured his first Gold Coast pole in four years, and third overall, by a big margin.

The 2013 race winner will launch from pole for the 85-lap Race 31, which will commence at 3:45pm local time.

The Penrite Racing driver put 0.4s on Shane van Gisbergen, who was last man out.

Van Gisbergen will, critically, start ahead of title rival Cam Waters.

Reynolds dedicated the pole to his crew, which spent the last fortnight repairing the #26 Ford after the Bathurst crash.

"That was probably one of the best laps I've done in my life," the 37-year-old said.

"There's no way I can repeat, don't ask me to do it again.

Reynolds on 'best lap of my life'

"My car hooked up and it gave me the time; when I came across the line, I couldn't believe I saw a 10.4.

"It's unbelievable for the guys at Penrite Racing, they've done a good job to repair the car after Bathurst.

"It's a nice reward for them... they worked so hard over the last two weeks to repair this car.

"It was so badly damaged. They've done a fantastic job, it's perfect since it rolled out of the truck.

"I can't thank them enough... I'm stoked to be on pole."

Waters will share the second row with Chaz Mostert, with Anton De Pasquale and Thomas Randle behind.

James Courtney will start seventh, and was last of the drivers to set a time.

Three drivers — Brodie Kostecki, Will Davison and Andre Heimgartner — were caught out by the Turn 1 chicane.

Kostecki and Heimgartner picked up kerb strikes, with Davison straightlining the chicane altogether.

Reynolds now has two poles in 2022, both coming at street circuits.

The veteran scored a shock pole for Race 6 at Albert Park back in April.

Van Gisbergen was last man out but, like his rivals, was unable to lay a finger on Reynolds.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver only needs to finish 24th to secure the 2022 championship.

Standing in his way is Reynolds, who last won a race on the streets of Newcastle in 2018.

"I'm not looking forward to it, 85 laps is a long way around here," Reynolds said.

"It's gonna be hot, we're trying a new cool suit system, we're a bit iffy on that.

"I'm starting on the front row, I'm giving myself the best opportunity to do a good job.

"The car's good, I just hope I can get the rear tyre to last. That's going to be crucial to our result today."
