David Reynolds has motored to provisional pole for Penrite Racing in Race 2 ARMOR ALL Qualifying in Newcastle.

Reynolds, who won the 2018 Newcastle finale — his most recent win — will be last man out in the Top Ten Shootout.

The 2017 Bathurst winner edged new Race 1 winner Cam Waters to help Ford to a one-two result.

Waters led the times early doors with a 1:12.005s, with Will Brown and Chaz Mostert just behind.

A flashpoint early on was an incident for Cameron Hill, who backed his #35 Truck Assist Camaro into the Turn 9 barriers.

Hill picked up rear bumper damage to his Camaro, but managed to return to the pits.

The balance of the field pitted with the yellow flags out for the stricken Hill.

Reynolds returned out-of-sequence with a 1:11.8159 in the #26 Penrite Racing Mustang, dropping Waters to second.

By the halfway point of the session, both Red Bull Ampol Racing cars hadn’t turned a lap of the 2.6km circuit.

Waters jumped into the 1:11s with a 1.11.8405, before clocking a 1.11.5677 to push Reynolds to second.

Nulon Racing driver James Golding then fired in a 1:11.5328s to knock Waters off top spot, with Todd Hazelwood (#3 CoolDrive Mustang) jumping to third.

Reynolds then went fastest with a 1.11.4872, and parked up for the closing minutes.

By that time, Shane van Gisbergen was eighth, with teammate Broc Feeney 21st.

Waters jumped Golding into second before both Red Bull Ampol Camaros jumped into the 10.

Saturday pole-sitter Brodie Kostecki (#99 Coca-Cola Camaro) was only good enough for 15th, with both Shell V-Power Mustangs again missing a Shootout berth.

Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale were only good enough for 11th and 21st respectively.

The ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout will commence at 12:35pm local time.

It will set the grid for Sunday afternoon’s 95-lap Race 2.
