After a strong run in Sunday's race in Darwin, David Reynolds looks to Townsville in the hope of continuing his goodform.

The Bottle-O driver funnily enough said his top five finish in the most recent 200km sprint wasn't a step forward, but just a lack of bad luck.

"The last two rounds I should've been probably second, and fourth or fifth, anyway - so I just stopped having bad luck for once," Reynolds told v8supercars.com.au of Sunday's run.

Deflated after a left tyre puncture in New Zealand's 200km, Reynolds declared himself the unluckiest man in pitlane. And even at the SKYCITY Triple Cown, things could have fallen his way a little more, as the appearance of the Safety Car early in the race was not the best case scenario, his Falcon - like eventual winner Mark Winterbottom - running the Dunlop soft tyre strategy.

"I started third, got a good start and probably pushed too hard the first stint, my tyre pressures too high in the rear," Reynolds explained.

"They went off and Mark (Winterbottom, race winner) caught me... he was fast...

"The Safety Car came out, half ruined our plans because if there was no Safety Car it would've been better for us."

The 28-year old did manage to gain a position in the Championship, nudging stablemate Chaz Mostert for eighth on the table, and now looks to the Castrol Townsville 500 - Driven by TAFE Queensland for a top three result.

"It's really tough out there - really tough. Everyone's so close, you make a small change and improve a few tenths and you're 10 spots up the grid...

"Townsville's a good track for me. Not sure about the (hard) tyre compound so we'll take it as it comes."

The V8 Supercars will run the Dunlop hard tyre for the entirity of the weekend.

Before he races on the circuit though, one lucky grandstand ticket holder (purchased before July 2) will have the chance to strap into The Bottle-O Falcon and have a hot lap of the treacherous street circuit with Reynolds.

He believes the track is one of the best stops on the V8 Supercars calendar to jump in a V8 Supercar, up there with Bathurst and Phillip Island as one of the ultimate thrillers.

"Townsville's a really good one because it's a street track, you're really close, there are some fast bits and some slow bits, big curves, the car's got a lot of attitude," Reynolds explained.

And while having the opportunity to share his sport with fans is a positive part of the job for Reynolds, he admitted he wasn't a great passenger!

"It's good giving people the experience, even though they're only sitting, they're not driving which is another realm again," he said.

"I'm a terrible passenger - really, really bad even in a race car!"

Last year Reynolds' best race result at the Townsville circuit was 11th.
