Jamie Whincup has edged ahead of Scott McLaughlin in the fight for the most ARMOR ALL Pole Positions in 2014.

In the final qualifying session of the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400, Whincup set the quickest lap early on - and bettered it in the final stages with a 1min31.18 lap, earning him another ARMOR ALL Pole Position, while others continued to chase him.

McLaughlin - who is fighting Whincup for the most poles - was just 0.07sec away in his Volvo, and will start alongside Champion elect in this afternoon's 200km race.

Mark Winterbottom - looking to earn his first p1 start since this time last year - only managed third, after being distracted by an issue Craig Lowndes had when laying their final runs. While Lowndes made an error at Siberia, he did not run off and Red Bull is not reporting any car or setup issues.

The two are fighting for second in the Championship, separated by just 44 points, though Lowndes will start down the order in 15th.

Alongside 'Frosty' is Garth Tander, who was a strong performer yesterday, with Shane van Gisbergen, Michael Caruso, Percat, Courtney, Jason Bright and Chaz Mostert also finishing in the top 10.

The 200km run begins at 3.55pm local time.
