HRT super strategy
A smart call behind the scenes meant a Team Red 1-2 finish in 2013. Garth Tander led James Courtney home in a thrilling 200km Sunday race. The dominant victory saw Courtney finish nine seconds ahead of third placed Shane van Gisbergen, while Tander was another 0.3 seconds in front of his teammate.
Davison’s wayward celebration
Back in his Ford Performance Racing days, Will Davison won his only race to date at Townsville in 2013 on Saturday. Enjoying his celebratory burnout, he whacked the fence with the rear of the car and had to drive back to victory lane with damage.
Whincup wins first ever Townsville race
Saturday of 2009 belonged to Jamie Whincup, the champ taking out the first ever race at the circuit in his then TeamVodafone Ford Falcon. Whincup came from ninth – where he qualified in the Top 10 Shootout. It was a controversial victory, given contact with Jack Perkins went unpenalised in the race. He led home HRT’s Will Davison and Garth Tander.
With the throwback Brock livery on the factory Holdens, Garth Tander and James Courtney had hearts racing in the team’s garage going door-to-door last year. This exchange came after two rounds where Courtney had taken Tander out on-track – and the 2010 champ received the words over the radio, “free to race but keep it clean”. Courtney finished second and Tander fourth after that late-race dice.
