Scott Pye has topped the Sunday morning warm-up session ahead of the Penrite Oil Sandown 500.

The outgoing Walkinshaw Andretti United driver put his #2 Commodore to the top of the timesheets with two minutes left on the clock with a 1:08.1908s, knocking Scott McLaughlin down to second.

Pye and co-driver Warren Luff will have plenty of work to do though in this afternoon’s race, from which they will start 23rd.

The pairing sit fourth in the PIRTEK Enduro Cup standings but were one of many to make the wrong tyre choice for the wet main driver sprint race yesterday, plummeting down the order.

“It’s a little bit more relaxed than the Bathurst one,” Pye said of the warm-up session.

“It’s so easy at Bathurst to stick it in the fence. Around here you can give it a bit of a crack, so we had some fun.

“Yesterday, wrong tyre choice and the balance was way off, so we’ve got a lot of work to do today.

“That was important for us that session, see what car speed we’ve got.

“We’ve really got to make sure we’ve got a good car under brakes because we’ve got plenty of overtaking we need to do today.”

Behind McLaughlin, Anton De Pasquale, Lee Holdsworth and Nick Percat rounded out the top five.

Most teams gave both their primary and co-driver seat time, as well as taking the opportunity to complete driver change pitstop practice.

The 500km race will start at 1:25pm.
