Chaz Mostert has shown promising signs in this morning's 15-minute practice session, topping the timesheets in his Pepsi Max FG X Falcon.

Mostert was out of the top 10 in yesterday's second race, finishing 12th - but today's 200km race, with pit stops and one set of Dunlop soft tyres in the mix, means there's plenty to play out at the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint.

The fastest time, a 51.445sec lap, was quicker than practice yesterday and just 0.093sec quicker than Prodrive stable-mate David Reynolds.

While Mostert had a few moments, he said he was simply looking for the limits to see how hard he can push in the upcoming 20-minute qualifying session.

"Just trying to tune up for qualy, see how deep we can go and find the limits," Mostert said.

This weekend he is working with Prodrive's head of engineering Nathaniel Osborne, as his regular engineer Adam DeBorre has been called overseas for personal reasons.

Freightliner Racing's Fabian Coulthard finished the session third, with Will Davison fourth, and Mark Winterbottom, yesterday's winner Craig Lowndes, James Courtney, Scott McLaughlin, Jamie Whincup and David Wall completing the top 10.

Others to note include Shane van Gisbergen 12, Scott Pye 17 and Garth Tander 18.
