Fan favourite Greg Murphy racks up his 200th V8 Supercars event start this weekend at the Castrol EDGE Gold Coast 600.

And the Holden Racing Team star would like to celebrate it one way - with a win.

Murphy believed the Gold Coast event had always been good to him, and after disaster struck here last year with James Courtney, is hoping to make amends and turn that luck around this weekend.

"We didn't bounce back at Bathurst unfortunately, so it would be nice to be able to achieve something here given we were so quick here last year and deserved to have a result, I think," Murphy said.

"I think the car's performing good so far like it did last year. But it's very difficult to pass here, you've got to be at the front of the grid and use a bit of strategy to hopefully benefit at the end of the day."

Murphy sits 14th on the all-time round winners list, with 11 event victories to his name.

Four race wins were achieved over his years at Surfers Paradise, and this afternoon he and Courtney will start 14th on the grid.

"I've been very fortunate here, right from the beginning actually, even back in 2-litre days.

"I've had some pretty good results here on the Gold Coast on the old circuit. When I was with HRT, we were quick here and won races here. I've got great memories of the Gold Coast circuit - I love it, I think it's a great circuit.

"We've changed it over the last couple of years and reduced it in size - the old circuit was one of the best street circuits you would find in the world.

"It was just a superb racetrack, and we've got a reduced one now and it's still fantastic."

While the Kiwi couldn't choose just one standout event in his career, Murphy couldn't go past a particular Bathurst weekend steeped in history.

"It's very difficult to try and isolate a Bathurst win, I think they're all incredibly special for their own reasons - one is not more special that the others," he said.

"But there was a significant moment in 2003 that probably made that weekend as a whole a little bit more special.

"I've had some good highs and some lows and that's what sort of defines your career - the highs and the lows. I'm not regretful about anything."

Confident the Holden Racing Team Commodore could get the job done this weekend - with he and Courtney in Pirtek Enduro Cup contention - 'Murph' was looking forward to hitting the 2.98km street circuit for the first of two 300km races this afternoon.
