Mostert keen to improve on 'character-building' Sydney

Chaz Mostert is champing at the bit to resolve his Sydney inconsistencies of 2021 ahead of the new season.

The 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will commence with dual mixed compound 300km races in Sydney.

Sydney Motorsport Park, which hosted four rounds last season, proved an Achilles heel for a number of teams.

That included Walkinshaw Andretti United, with Mostert claiming one podium in 10 starts.

Notably, that podium came after an inspired drive from 26th in wet conditions.

Mostert’s average race finish in the other nine SMSP starts was 7.7.

SMSP wasn't kind to Mostert in 2021

He finished the season with a crushing victory from pole in Bathurst, and secured his best career points finish of third.

However, starting the new season at the notoriously tricky SMSP has the 16-time race winner on notice.

“We’re back to SMP, where we had ups and downs [last year],” said Mostert, whose new Mobil 1 Optus Commodore was unveiled on Thursday.

“It’s 50-50; I’m a little bit worried about going there, but excited to try and work on those weaknesses that we had last year.

“We never really want to do four rounds at one track.

“To have that diversity of going back to one round here, and another different style of track, is what we love about our series."

Mostert and WAU battled round to round in Sydney to find a balance that worked.

The one time the car qualified at the pointy end, Mostert was sent to the rear of the grid.

He later pieced together one of the performances of the season in trying conditions, but much of the performance was arguably talent over set-up.

Fast forward to Mount Panorama, and Mostert was near untouchable as he and Lee Holdsworth cantered to victory.

The Bathurst performance has his rivals looking over their shoulder ahead of the new season.

However, Mostert knows a repeat of last year’s SMSP struggles could prove costly.

'I’m a little bit worried about going there'

“Obviously it was a pretty big and quick finish to last year,” he said.

“SMP was very character-building for us; we had plenty of different results.

“Then we finished up in Bathurst, which is the one everyone wants to win if you can’t win the championship.

“Obviously had a fantastic race, everything went our way, we had a super-fast race car and to get the win was amazing.

“It’s exciting to try and roll that confidence into ’22. We’ve got a good car we can keep building on.”

Mostert will test his new Mobil 1 Optus Commodore at Winton next week.
