A wild off for Anton De Pasquale brought an early end to Practice 2, which was topped by Chaz Mostert.

Mostert, who won last December’s Bathurst 1000, ended the first day of the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight top of the time sheets.

The session was cut short with a minute remaining after De Pasquale bowled a major wide at Turn 1.

De Pasquale slid across the outfield grass and came to rest beyond Turn 2.

The #11 Shell Mustang avoided a brush with the tyre barriers, but with the car stranded, the session was declared.

All told, Mostert ousted long-time rival Cam Waters by just 0.07s, with Will Brown a further 0.058s behind.

All cars bar Jake Kostecki rolled out of pit lane for the 40-minute session.

Kostecki was hamstrung by low battery voltage, but joined the session within the opening 10 minutes.

Drivers grappled with a wet-dry circuit, humidity and the glare of the setting sun into Turn 1.

The balance of the field started the session on dry tyres, with those on wets quickly reverting to slick rubber as the circuit dried.

The session was halted after 10 minutes after Jack Smith again struck trouble on Turn 2.

At the time of the stoppage, Waters held top spot on a 1:33.383s from Andre Heimgartner, De Pasquale, Broc Feeney and Mostert.

Waters wound up second

Shane van Gisbergen shaved 0.035s off Waters’ time to vault to the top with a 1:34.347s.

Waters responded immediately to unseat van Gisbergen by 0.144s.

Within seconds, Waters was fifth as Brown, Mark Winterbottom, Feeney and Heimgartner set personal bests.

De Pasquale, who topped the earlier session, drew within 0.06s of Brown to move into second.

Drivers began to take on fresh rubber; Davison fired to the top on a 1:33.429s, and quickly lowered his own benchmark to a 1:32.965s.

With 15 minutes remaining, Mostert was quickest on a 1:32.838s; with eight minutes to go, he went faster on a 1:32.535s.

Waters loomed to unseat Mostert, but an error at the final corner caught him 0.07s short.

However, that was nothing compared to what De Pasquale suffered, with the Shell Mustang sliding across the wet grass at a rate of knots.

De Pasquale was eighth behind Scott Pye, David Reynolds, van Gisbergen and Davison.

Jack Le Brocq and Lee Holdsworth rounded out the top 10.

The top 15 drivers were covered by 0.959s.
