Mostert/Holdsworth deliver record Holden Bathurst win

Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth’s victory in this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 has given Holden a record 35th win in the ‘Great Race’ at Mount Panorama.

Holdens have won the race more times than any other manufacturer and the 2021 win now takes it to a 35-20 lead over nearest rival Ford.

Apart from Holden and Ford, only Nissan (two wins), Morris (Mini), Jaguar, BMW and Volvo (all single wins), have won the Bathurst 500/1000 endurance race since it was first held in 1963.

The amazing motorsport history of Holden, particularly at Bathurst, is told in an epic 400-page, hardcover book titled ‘Racing the Lion’, covering all aspects of Holden’s motorsport involvement.

The 2021 win also gave the Commodore nameplate its 28th Bathurst 1000 win.

Peter Brock and Jim Richards gave Commodore its first Bathurst 1000 win back in 1980 for the Holden Dealer Team.

Holden won three times in the Series Production era (1968, 1969, 1972), eight times in Group C (1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984) and three times in Group A (1986, 1987, 1990).

It won three more (1993, 1995, 1996) when the five-litre touring car rules were introduced and 18 more since the V8 Supercars/Supercars era kicked off in 1997.

The win also broke a 10-year drought in the race for Walkinshaw Andretti United.

The team’s last win in the Bathurst classic came in 2011 under the Holden Racing Team banner with Garth Tander and Nick Percat behind the wheel.

Despite no longer being an active brand in the new car market in Australia, GM’s Holden brand will be aiming for its 36th and last ‘Great Race’ win next year.

The 2022 Repco Bathurst 1000, due to be held on October 9, 2022, will be the last appearance in the famous race of a Holden prior to the introduction of Gen3 rules for 2023 and Chevrolet Racing’s Camaro representing General Motors making its Mountain race debut.

The 13-event 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will commence in Newcastle next year. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
