Mostert fastest at Winton

Chaz Mostert has recorded the quickest time in the final practice session at the NP300 Navara Winton SuperSprint, while his teammate Mark Winterbottom ended the hour back in the pack.

The Pepsi Max Crew driver was strong at the last event in Perth, and now Mostert - who set his 1min23.015 on Dunlop hard tyres - has shown good pace ahead of qualifying tomorrow in the hour-long session.

While Winterbottom was running last in the final minute, a last lap dash saw him shift to 19th, at a circuit he believes will test the new FG X.

"The car went alright," Mostert said. "When it's not handling it's hard to drive and when it's handling you click with it ... Perth was good, fingers crossed we can be good here as well."

Mostert jumped to the top with just under five minutes to go, knocking James Moffat and his Nissan off the top spot.

Moffat is back at the circuit where he achieved Nissan's first win, as well as his maiden victory in a V8 Supercar in 2013, though he set his lap - just 0.252sec shy of Mostert - on soft tyres.

"That is nice, but not quite sure what that means," Moffat said post-session.

"We'll just keep doing what we're doing and trying our best."

James Courtney in the #22 Holden Racing Team Commodore was third in the order - also a 2013 race winner at Winton - with Scott McLaughlin and David Reynolds completing the top five.

With Red Bull looking to break its recent bad run at the 3km Victorian circuit, Craig Lowndes pulled up 10th in the session, but teammate and reigning Champion Jamie Whincup finished 20th.

The day's early fast man Tim Slade was back in 24th in the second session.

Teams were given an additional set of green hard tyres for today's practice sessions, which will be handed back tonight, and then returned to the teams after the racing, to add to their testing/practice tyre banks.

There is a short practice session tomorrow morning before back-to-back qualifying and two 60km races at the NP300 Navara SuperSprint.
