Scott McLaughlin has trumped a quick Jamie Whincup for ARMOR ALL Pole Position for today's second 60 kilometre sprint at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint.

Whincup seemed to have had secured the P1 startwhen the chequered flag dropped, but was pushed back to second when McLaughlin recorded a 1min30.753 around the fast Phillip Island circuit in the dying stages of the session.

Only 0.0898 seconds separated Whincup from McLaughlin, who have both secured their fifth ARMOR ALL Pole Positions of 2015 today, with Whincup taking the first grid spot for the first race this afternoon.

"Smashed by a tenth in the last corner, I don't know how," Whincup said after the session.

"We'll reassess and hopefully have a good race car this afternoon."

Whincup's Red Bull stablemate Craig Lowndes will start the race in third, lining up alongside championship rival Mark Winterbottom in fourth.
