The return of the Adelaide 500 has been bolstered with the South Australian Motorsport Board appointing a new chairman.

The popular Adelaide event will end the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship in December.

It will be the first Adelaide 500 since February 2020, with this year’s event slated for December 1-4.

The event will be revived amid Peter Malinauskas leading the Labor party back into South Australian government last weekend.

According to Adelaide’s Advertiser newspaper, Andrew Daniels has been appointed chairman of the board by Premier Malinauskas.

Daniels was previously deputy executive director of the Australian Formula One Grand Prix Board when F1 raced in South Australia.

He was also CEO of the Motorsport Board between 1998 and 2008.

Most recently, Daniel was CEO of the Adelaide Oval.

"The Adelaide 500 is not just a motor race,” Daniels told the Advertiser.

"It is a four-day festival in Adelaide with the best-standard national motorsport, music and all sorts of other attractions and displays and activities.

"That’s what makes it work. That’s what really gives the extraordinary atmosphere.”

The 2022 season will resume at Albert Park on April 7-10.
