This month’s NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint will see Mark Winterbottom become Symmons Plains’ most experienced driver.

Winterbottom heads to Tasmania 13th overall, having suffered a bizarre post-race collision with Todd Hazelwood in Sydney.

To next weekend’s event, Winterbottom has started 43 races at the rural Launceston venue.

Just Craig Lowndes and Jason Bright have started more races at Symmons Plains; albeit, just one more (44).

What’s more is that Winterbottom has finished all 43 races he has started in Tasmania.

From 43 starts, he has recorded 32 top 10 finishes and 23 top five finishes.

The 561-race veteran will equal Lowndes and Bright on the Saturday, and will clear them in Sunday's first race.

The 2015 champion recorded his first race start at Symmons Plains in 2004, when the circuit returned after a five-year hiatus.

While he has a long history with the 2.4km circuit, success has been hard to come by for Winterbottom on the Apple Isle.

He has just one race win at the track, coming with Ford Performance Racing in 2010. He also has 10 additional podiums; only Jamie Whincup, Peter Brock and Lowndes have more.

Winterbottom’s 2010 win was something of an outlier; Ford has won just three of 24 races at Symmons Plains since.

His last podium in Tasmania came in the dramatic 2016 finale, with Lowndes second behind winner Will Davison (see main image).

Critically, Winterbottom’s most recent most recent ARMOR ALL Pole Position came at Symmons Plains.

Just after his high profile move to Team 18 in 2019, Winterbottom claimed the Saturday pole, but finished fourth.

He has yet to record a pole since, nor has he scored a podium finish for Team 18.

Winterbottom will be hoping to tap into the success Lowndes and Bright both enjoyed in Tasmania.

Lowndes won 10 races at Symmons Plains; only Whincup (13) won more. Bright won races for FPR (2006) and Brad Jones Racing (2013).

Winterbottom will also be keen to continue the streak for Triple Eight-built cars in Tasmania, which have won 23 of the last 33 races.
