Kostecki happy to consolidate points lead

Brodie Kostecki was happy to consolidate his series lead despite Erebus Motorsport teammate Will Brown continuing to step forward.

Brown won on Saturday and Sunday at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, and outscored Kostecki by 84 points.

Heading to the betr Darwin Triple Crown, Kostecki leads Brown by 87 points, having led his teammate by 171 points heading to Tasmania.

Kostecki retains the orange numbers, but hasn’t won since Race 5 at Albert Park in early April.

Meanwhile, Brown has won three of the last four races, and has scored five straight podiums.

However, the 25-year-old was pleased to be fighting at the pointy end despite being unable to convert his Sunday poles to wins.

“I’m actually pretty happy with today,” Kostecki said.

“It was a much better day today than it was yesterday. Got a really good bag of points, and it was good for the team as well.

“It’s great to see the car speed has transitioned into this place — it’s strange, this track.

“It’s great to see it’s all still working."

Kostecki lost a swag of points on Saturday after he was caught up in an incident at the Turn 4 hairpin.

It was the first time all season that Kostecki had missed the top 10, having been on a run of eight straight podiums.

Heading into Sunday, Shane van Gisbergen was 74 points behind, but he had a nightmare of his own on Sunday after crashing out of Race 11.

Van Gisbergen dropped to fourth behind Chaz Mostert, with Mostert and van Gisbergen 166 and 172 points behind heading to Darwin.

For Kostecki, the ambition is simple — make good of the good days, and reduce the number of bad days.

"Not running up the front is not ideal when you’re trying to go for a championship," Kostecki said.

"It was a great way to bounce back, with two poles today and racing Broc for the win in the first one, and being on the podium in the last one.

"We’ve got to make our bad days not so bad, and the good days good.

“We’ve been to a few different tracks now, and the car’s been speedy at all of them.

“We’ll go to Darwin, we have a test day coming up so we’ll try a few different things."

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the betr Darwin Triple Crown in June.
