'Got my a** handed to me!': Brown on front row result

Erebus Motorsport rookie Will Brown was "pumped" to record his first main game front row start for Saturday’s opening race in Sydney.

Brown looked good for Race 20 pole, but was denied by a dominant Anton De Pasquale.

The 23-year-old was the sixth driver out in ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout, clocking a lap of 1:29.040s.

Brown demoted teammate Brodie Kostecki, who will launch from fifth for the race.

Nick Percat, Shane van Gisbergen, and Will Davison all failed to better Brown’s flyer.

The Erebus garage was fixed on De Pasquale's lap, but the Ford driver was imperious en route to his fifth pole of 2021.

It would have marked Erebus' first pole since Townsville 2019, and a first pole for a full-time rookie driver since Chris Pither in 2016.

"I knew it was pretty good lap; I was pretty pumped to be watching Anton there," Brown said.

"I got my arse handed to me by him there!

"Five tenths, but it’s pretty cool to be starting on the front row, that’s amazing, to be back after all these months off.

"The boys and girls have worked so hard to get it ready, so I’m so pumped."

Brown sought improvement on Saturday, having ended Friday practice ninth, five places behind Kostecki.

Brown set the fifth fastest time in qualifying, finishing ahead of Kostecki for the first time this weekend.

Despite missing out on pole, Brown's chances of a maiden victory remain firmly alive.

Of the 12 night races in ATCC/Supercars history, 10 have been won from the front row.

When asked what he can bring to the race from a front row start, Brown said: "We will be having a big crack, I’m here to win a race here.

"I won’t be leaving anything on the table, let’s see how we go."

The 32-lap Race 20 will commence under lights at 7:10pm AEDT.
