Andre Heimgartner has scored provisional Race 30 pole, with Jamie Whincup surviving a Turn 1 crash to reach the shootout.

Heimgartner pipped champion-elect Shane van Gisbergen by 0.055s in the water-logged 15-minute session at Sydney Motorsport Park.

There were a number of key notables to miss a shootout berth; Will Davison qualified 11th, Will Brown 16th, Anton De Pasquale 17th and Brodie Kostecki 19th.

Whincup managed to secure a place in the shootout despite suffering a high-speed off at Turn 1.

The seven-time champion was sixth on the time sheets when he flew off the track at speed and found the tyre barrier.

However, with rain intensifying, Whincup only dropped one position and safely earned passage into the one-lap dash.

Todd Hazelwood also survived an identical moment, yet like Whincup, still managed to hang onto his shootout berth.

Fabian Coulthard qualified an impressive fourth ahead of Nick Percat and Tim Slade, with Chaz Mostert, Cameron Waters and David Reynolds rounding out the top 10.

"I love those sort of conditions," said Heimgartner, who scored pole and won in the wet in Tailem Bend in May.

"It's good fun, hoping you don't fly off the track... car was comfortable at the start and we managed to put in a good time.

"Luckily we had the running [in the wet] last week, so I knew what I needed to do from the first lap. We were just able to execute."

Cars will return for the ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout at 12:30pm AEDT, with Race 30 to conclude the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight. Click here to view the race schedule.
