Star V8 Supercars driver Rick Kelly has thrown his support behind the Motor Accident Commission (MAC) to urge Clipsal 500 race goers to think twice about the transport choices they make this weekend.

Thanks to MAC, motorsport fans with a ticket to this weekend’s racing can travel to and from the track for free on any Adelaide Metro bus, train or tram.

Speaking of the initiative, Kelly said with the new race format for this year’s event there will be a great atmosphere trackside, but if you’re thinking about having a drink, make sure you plan how you are going to get home.

“There is absolutely no excuse to drink and drive. With free public transport available over the race weekend, it makes sense to leave the keys at home,” Kelly said.

With 26 per cent of all drivers and riders killed on South Australian roads during 2013 having had an illegal blood alcohol concentration (BAC), resisting the temptation to drink and drive by leaving the car at home this weekend has never been more sensible.

MAC General Manager Road Safety Michael Cornish said it remained disappointing some people within the community continued to ignore the drink drive messages and put the lives of others at risk.

“This is a great initiative. Not only does it provide all motorsport fans with hassle free transport to and from the track, it is a sensible transport alternative for those who plan to enjoy a few drinks while watching the race,” Cornish said.

Clipsal 500 Adelaide CEO Mark Warren said he encouraged all event patrons to take advantage of the free public transport initiative, supported by MAC, and to take on board the advice of V8 Supercar driver Kelly when it came to drink driving prevention.
