Sights & Sounds: First Gen3 test day of 2022

The next phase of testing for the Gen3 prototypes is underway.

From Monday, the General Motors Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Gen3 Ford Mustang GT prototypes will undergo durability testing at Queensland Raceway.

Will Davison and Zane Goddard will steer the Gen3 Mustang, with Shane van Gisbergen and Broc Feeney aboard the Camaro.

The testing marks another key milestone for the Gen3 project, following the public unveiling at December’s Repco Bathurst 1000.

Featuring updates to the suspension package and several mechanical parts, the Gen3 cars will be tested with a more 'representative platform' than initially tested at Mount Panorama.

Gen3 Project Engineer John Russell explained the significance of the test days at the Ipswich circuit.

"We now have a more representative platform of the Gen3 cars, but it's completely not finished yet," Russell told Supercars.com.

"Today we are going through all the systems that allow us to make sure that the anomalies that showed up in the shakedowns at Bathurst have been cured.

"Essentially the next few days are all about doing systems checks, getting mileage on the cars, and getting a better understanding of the cars.

"We also want to understand the dynamic of the two homologation teams that are working on the cars as well as the driver's feedback on the cars.

"Then as we escalate the project, we are continuing to build closer and closer to a parity package."

The prototypes are set to complete two days of testing on Monday and Tuesday this week, ahead of two further test days early next week.

Both test days are open for public viewing at Queensland Raceway.

The Gen3 Camaro and Mustang will make their racing debut in the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship.

On-track exhibitions of the Gen3 cars will be carried out at Supercars events throughout this year.

The 13-event 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will commence in Newcastle in March. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
