Feeney's shootout delight despite final-run error
An error on his final run wasn’t enough to deny rookie Broc Feeney a maiden ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout berth.
Feeney scraped into the shootout in Sydney by just 0.06s on Saturday.
The 19-year-old clocked the 10th fastest time in the first qualifying session of 2022.
Feeney was 0.817s from provisional pole sitter Anton De Pasquale, who led a Shell V-Power Racing Team one-two.
The teenager admitted nerves following his mistake, but was otherwise delighted to reach the shootout at his very first attempt.
"I was pretty nervous towards the end there, I made a mistake on my last run," the 19-year-old said.
"So it ended up being my first lap of the day that got me in the shootout.
"But I've never been so excited to be P10 in the qualifying, there's a lot more in it. Just need to tune myself up."
Rain held off throughout the 15-minute session, marking the first dry running at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend.
Feeney’s teammate and reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen was 0.341s off the pace of De Pasquale.
Brad Jones Racing recruit Andre Heimgartner impressed to fourth.
The biggest surprise was Cam Waters, who was only good enough for 22nd. All four Tickford Racing drivers failed to reach the shootout.
Feeney, who won last year’s Super2 title, was eyes wide open in his first weekend as a main game driver.
"[The standard] obviously, is pretty high," Feeney said.
"The biggest thing is there's 24 of the best drivers in Australia here.
"Normally there's a few standouts in the junior categories, but when you get in here, everyone's on 100 per cent.
"Those little mistakes that I made just then could have cost me the top 10, where in Super2 and Super3 I could have still been in the mix.
"There’s not pressure on my shoulders, but I need to make sure I do a better job next time."
