Fire erupts as multiple cars wrecked in huge crash

Broc Feeney says the crash that triggered his first DNF was a “shame”, saying his car is “pretty smashed”.

Feeney was caught up in the dramatic Gold Coast chicane crash on Sunday.

The #88 Red Bull Ampol Commodore was turned by James Courtney, who was then hit by Lee Holdsworth.

It marked Feeney’s first DNF in 2022, which was his first retirement as a full-time driver.

Shane van Gisbergen’s win ensured Red Bull Ampol Racing still secured the teams’ championship.

“The body is fine after today’s shunt – all good,” he said.

"I dropped a couple of spots off the start but the car felt really good, it felt like we made an improvement from yesterday.

"We went through the beach chicane and one of the cars ahead had a big moment, hit a tyre bundle and spun out into the fence.

“Initially I thought I was going to be okay — I slowed right up and was trying to avoid the crash myself.

“Then got a massive whack from behind… that pushed me into the car that was stopped and then into the fence.

“Then another three cars piled into the back of me. Thankfully I’m all good."

It was the first DNF for a full-time Triple Eight driver since Jamie Whincup crashed out of the 2020 Bathurst 1000.

Feeney cast his gaze to his team’s efforts with Gen3, which will now shift to repairing the damaged #88.

“Just sucks obviously, the car is pretty smashed,” he said.

"This next month is supposed to be focused on building Gen3 cars and now we’ve got to repair our car before Adelaide.

“It’s just a shame – we’ve been having such a good year, finishing all the races and being super consistent.

“Then having something that was completely out of our hands, is a shame.

"It’s been a pretty tough weekend but we’ll bounce back for Adelaide and try and end the season on a high."

The 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will conclude on the Adelaide streets in December.
