Practice 4 Highlights - Castrol EDGE Townsville 400

2013 Townsville race winner Will Davison led his rookie teammate Ash Walsh home in morning practice at the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400.

In his Erebus Mercedes-Benz AMG E63, Davison earned his first podium with the team last year at the street track, and after recording yesterday's quickest overall time, it is looking positive for Davison again this time around. He recorded a 1min13.03 lap, 0.25sec ahead of Walsh.

The 20-minute session gave teams a final chance to tweak the V8 Supercars before this afternoon's qualifying and 200km race, and Davison felt the decisions Erebus has made will assist him in the qualifying dash this afternoon.

"I think we made some gains," Davison said.

"We tried to make some changes that will make it better in qualifying."

This weekend's two races utilise both the hard and soft compound Dunlop tyres.

"The car's really well balanced on the [soft] tyre ... it's hard to know on the hard," Davison admitted.

The practice session was punctuated byone red flag for Scott McLaughlin who suffered an engine drama.

The young gun had recorded the sixth quickest time before the issue, which he said mirrored the problems the Volvo squad experienced earlier this season.

"It dropped to seven cylinders, a similar issue to what we had early in the year," McLaughlin told v8supercars.com.au.

"It's unfortunate, but just what happens.

"The boys will probably have to change an engine or do something to the engine -but there's plenty of time for that."

Behind the two Erebus cars were other young stars Nick Percat, Scott Pye and Chaz Mostert, with Championship leader Mark Winterbottom sixth.

Shane van Gisbergen, whose Darrell Lea STIX Commodore suffered from a vibration yesterday, was seventh in the order.

Others to note include Craig Lowndes 15th, and last year's two Townsville winners Jamie Whincup and Garth Tander 19th and 20th.
