Paul Dumbrell has stepped from the Wilson Security Sandown 500-leading Red Bull Holden Commodore VF happy to have completed his extended stint in the lead, although still critical of his own performance.

"I made a few small mistakes out there which didn't cost too much time, but looking back I will figure out why I lost concentration or why I went a bit deep," he said.

"But it has been good so far."

Dumbrell pitted on lap 86, his stint extended because of safety car that brought the field in for a pit stop only laps before he could have vacated the car for regular pilot Jamie Whincup.

But Dumbrell told v8supercars.com.au he had enjoyed his time behind the wheel.

"It was good fun, it was like a big qualifying session out there. The boys wanted me to push on for a little while, then we were saving fuel for a little while.

"The car is very good although it's hard to get a true reflection of how the cars are going to be. Now the main guys are in the cars it will show who is going to be fast late in the day."
