Cam Waters and Will Davison have dismissed Shane van Gisbergen’s Race 3 aggression as "hard racing".

Van Gisbergen won a thrilling NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint from fifth on the grid.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver regained the points lead from Chaz Mostert, who finished 23rd after an incident.

Van Gisbergen’s aggressive overtaking at Symmons Plains garnered attention.

The reigning champion's charge to victory began when he passed teammate Broc Feeney for fourth on the opening lap.

He continued his march, taking third from Erebus Motorsport's Brodie Kostecki on lap 6, then set after Davison.

Van Gisbergen uses the side draft on Davison

Van Gisbergen's overtakes on Davison and Waters at the Turn 4 hairpin were both preceded by contact.

The second exchange initially received an ardent response from Waters, who eventually finished third behind Davison.

Both drivers gave their assessment of van Gisbergen’s tactics post-race.

"I can’t even remember what I said during the race," Waters said.

"But I didn't brake early [into the hairpin], it was just that was all I had left.

"I was braking as efficiently as I could, but Shane's car was pretty quick, and he could turn under me.

"I’m all for hard racing and bumping and all that stuff.

"I don't think there's much in it, I expect to be able to give it back to people and not get them either.

"That's what we want, we are an entertainment business. We don't want to just follow the leader.

"I did flip him the bird, I don't think he even saw it, so I’m a bit disappointed about that.

"But yeah, I'm all for it, hard racing."

Davison's focus was instead centred on closing the gap to van Gisbergen.

Waters laments poor second stint

"I didn't even comment on it during the race," Davison said of van Gisbergen’s move.

"I mean, there was definitely contact a couple of times, but I was more concerned about not being as efficient in the braking and being vulnerable.

"So yes, there was certainly a bit of contact, but that's the way it goes the moment.

"I'll just focus on being more competitive and be able to put more pressure on them."
