Will Davison and Shane van Gisbergen have clocked new Symmons Plains lap records in Practice 1.

Davison and van Gisbergen gapped the field with their last-gasp laps in the 30-minute session.

Davison’s 50.345s proved 0.147s quicker than van Gisbergen’s practice/qualifying record set last year.

“It’s a good start,” Davison said.

“It’s first time for all of us on the Super Soft tyre.

“You've got to push hard, you've got to tip it into Turn 2 and the [Turn 4] hairpin."

Van Gisbergen undercut his own record and ended up just 0.07s behind Davison.

Cam Waters, James Courtney and Anton De Pasquale rounded out the top 10.

'You gotta push hard': Davison on challenging tyres

The NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint is the first event in 2022 to solely use the Super Soft tyre.

The time from the corresponding session in 2021, a Waters 50.846s, was undercut by Mark Winterbottom with five minutes remaining.

Winterbottom and Waters traded top times in the closing minutes before the balance of the field returned for final runs.

Courtney vaulted to the top on a 50.562s before Waters, van Gisbergen and Davison all went quicker.

Andre Heimgartner impressed to sixth ahead of points leader Chaz Mostert, with Todd Hazelwood, Winterbottom and Feeney rounding out the top 10.

Record-breaking Practice 1 Highlights: NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint

Less than a second covered positions one through 23.

Tim Slade encountered a power steering issue and wound up last.

The top 10 runners were covered by just 0.280s.

Cars will return to the circuit for second NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint at 11:40am AEDT.
