"Seat-of-your-pants feel" has been at the heart of Will Davison's record pace in Darwin.

The Shell V-Power Racing Team veteran broke his own practice/qualifying record for the second time in as many days.

Davison blew his rivals out of the water on Sunday morning with his 1:04.811s.

It proved some 0.142s quicker than his record set in the Saturday shootout.

“As much as you look at your vision and look at data, it’s seat of your pants feel,” he said.

“No matter how many times I thought I had it completely dialled… you hit the same markers, and if you don’t execute, the car doesn’t behave.

“I didn’t quite get the first run right, but I built up and nailed it in the second one.

“It was about being very, very accurate… you’ve gotta be smooth, but you’ve gotta be committed too.”

Davison now has six ARMOR ALL Pole Positions, and four of the last five in Darwin.

A win in his 500th race went begging on Saturday, with Davison settling for second behind teammate Anton De Pasquale.

De Pasquale was the form qualifier in 2021, but the tables have turned in the Shell V-Power garage.

For Davison, it took minor creature comfort changes to understand where he could find pace.

That he did, Davison twice undercutting his 2021 lap record.

He was the only driver to set a 1:04s lap all weekend.

“Conditions, tricky to go out thinking it would be super grippy with the cooler conditions,” he said.

“Not sure if it was the S5000 rubber, there was quite a bit of dirt on the circuit.

“First run caught me by surprise a little bit, didn’t quite get the tyres up in the first sector.

“Came home strong at the end of that first lap but I knew I had to alter my warm-up procedure for that run.

“Just changed it a little bit and could feel starting the lap, the tyres were there.

"Tried to replicate the shootout, and it was possibly better in a few spots.

“To lower my quali record to a four-eight is pretty cool.”

Race 17 will commence at 11:55am local time, followed by Race 18 at 3:25pm.
