James Courtney will miss this weekend's racing at the Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint after being injured this afternoon.
Courtney has two fractured ribs, and a pneumothorax, which is a small pocket of air between the ribs and lungs. It creates pressure on the lungs and makes breathing difficult. Courtney will remain in hospital for a couple of days to receive treatment.
In his place, co-driver Jack Perkins will steer the #22 Holden Commodore, making his racing debut for the Holden Racing Team.
Courtney has been a Championship contender this season and sits fifth in the points standings.
He has previously missed a Championship event after breaking his leg in a substantial crash at Phillip Island in 2013.
Courtney was hit by a piece of debris that loosened by a Navy helicopter conducting a display at the event. He was subsequently transported to Westmead Hospital for further assessment.
The Royal Australian Navy and V8 Supercars have commenced investigations into the incident.
More to come.
