A post-race penalty has seen James Courtney lose his Race 4 podium at the Beaurepaires Melbourne SuperSprint.

Courtney crossed the line second in his #5 Snowy River Caravans Mustang behind winner Brodie Kostecki.

The 2010 champion was implicated in the lap 1 incident which saw David Reynolds beached in the Turn 1 gravel trap.

The incident was investigated after the race, with Courtney carrying on and racing to second.

Tickford Racing teammate Cam Waters was also implicated, and was initially classified 21st.

A 30-second time penalty has since been applied, dropping Courtney to 22nd in the results.

It elevates Broc Feeney to third position, and Shane van Gisbergen to second, with points leader Chaz Mostert fourth.

A Motorsport Australia statement reads: "Following a post-race investigation for the incident at Turn 1 on the first lap and admission to breach of Schedule B2 Article 2.1.1 - Careless Driving by Car 5 James Courtney, determined Car 5 initiated the contact to Car 6, resulting in Car 6 making contact with Car 26 David Reynolds coming to a stop in the gravel trap, losing multiple positions, the Stewards imposed a thirty (30) second time penalty on Car 5."

In a team statement, Tickford Racing said it was "disappointed" by the outcome.

"While we understand the decision of the stewards, Tickford Racing is disappointed that the outcome of Race 4 has been determined in this way," the statement reads.

"Fans want to see competitiveness on the track and today's race, while short, delivered an intensity that everyone wants to see injected into our sport."

James Golding also lost his top 10 finish over a pit lane breach.

Golding was found to have impeded Jack Smith in an unsafe release scenario, and was slapped with a 15-second penalty.

The #31 Nulon Camaro drops to 21st in the classification.

The statement continues: "Following a post-race investigation and admission to a Pit Lane breach - unsafe release of Car 31 James Golding, impeded Car 4 Jack Smith, the Stewards impose a Fifteen (15) second time penalty to Car 31.”

Cars will return on Saturday for back-to-back ARMOR ALL Qualifying sessions at 9:05am local time.
