Campbell accident brings out red flag

Matt Campbell has become the second casualty of the Repco Bathurst 1000 weekend following an accident in Practice 5.

Campbell, who is paired with Andre Heimgartner, clipped the wall on approach to Sulman Park 10 minutes into the co-drivers only session.

The Porsche ace slid the #NED Whisky Mustang into the corner before it overcorrected into the wall.

As Campbell slowly returned the car to the garage, it veered into the right-side wall on Conrod Straight, where it came to rest.

Kelly Grove Racing has already commenced repairs on the car, with Campbell citing a possible brake line issue for the secondary incident.

“Coming down the mountain, something started to break and started to veer to the right,” Campbell said.

“Obviously after the crash, it has sheared a brake line or something.

“As I got to the brake pedal, it’s gone to the floor more or less.

“At the same time, the pedal box has accelerated. I couldn’t stop, but I was also going a little bit faster.

“It’s a shame for the second part of the accident; I was going slowly, something broke, I started to veer to the right and there was nothing I could do.

“I feel sorry for the boys, but the car was feeling good.”

Chris Pither was the first driver to strike major drama on Thursday, finding the wall at Forrest’s Elbow in the first co-drivers session.

Heimgartner qualified 17th for Sunday’s Great Race, with Erebus Motorsport driver Will Brown clocking the fastest time in Friday’s session.

Supercars will return to the track on Saturday for Practice 6 at 12:15pm AEDT. Click here to view the track schedule.

Every session of the event will be broadcast live on Foxtel (Fox Sports 503) and streamed on Kayo.

The Seven Network will provide live free to air coverage of the event. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
