A late flyer has helped Will Brown pace opening Pizza Hut Winton SuperSprint practice.

Brown dropped in a 1:18.720s as the chequered flag flew to unseat David Reynolds.

Reynolds' early-session 1:18.831s proved the benchmark for much of the 30-minute session.

The top 21 cars were covered by just 0.98s, with the margin between Brown and Reynolds just 0.11s.

"The Boost Mobile Commodore was feeling fantastic then," Brown said.

"I rolled out for the first practice and probably didn’t put the best lap together.

"Tom [Moore, engineer] said we were third... I was really happy with the overall set-up of the car.

"We had a great test day here only a week ago, so probably a bit of an advantage.

"To end up P1 after having a couple of tough rounds, it’s great. Hopefully we can roll that through this weekend.

"If we can do the same as this session [in Practice 2], I’d be pretty happy; that’s the focus.

"At least when you roll out and the balance is just a few little tweaks, and you’re not throwing wholesale set-ups at it.

"We’ll do a few small tweaks and hopefully we’ll be faster."

Cam Waters was third all told on a 1:18.947s ahead of Team 18 duo Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye.

Anton De Pasquale, who was 20th, completed the most laps in the session with 18.

Series leader Shane van Gisbergen was 13th, some 0.75s off the pace, with Broc Feeney 23rd.

Red Bull Ampol Racing ace van Gisbergen was the highest-placed Queensland-based entry.

Will Davison, who broke his win drought last time out in Perth, was just 25th.

Wildcard duo Jordan Boys and Jayden Ojeda were 17th and 18th respectively.

The session commenced in cold conditions, with drivers welcomed by five-degree temperatures.

This weekend's event will be solely held on the Dunlop Super Soft tyre.

It didn't take long for drivers to lap into a rhythm, with Reynolds setting his fastest lap on his third tour.

Through 10 minutes, Reynolds led Waters, Macauley Jones, van Gisbergen and Chaz Mostert.

Reynolds' time held sway until the final moments, with Brown firing his #9 Boost Mobile Commodore to the top.

Teammate Brodie Kostecki was sixth ahead of Mostert and Jones, with Andre Heimgartner and Lee Holdsworth rounding out the top 10.

Cars will return to the track for Practice 2 at 10:45am local time.
