Heated words between Brown and Winterbottom

Will Brown has detailed his heated post-race discussion with Mark Winterbottom, suggesting the matter has been put to bed.

Brown suffered a 56g impact on the opening lap in Race 28 at Pukekohe on Sunday.

Replays showed Brown being escorted wide by Winterbottom at Turn 9.

The #9 Boost Mobile Commodore made heavy side-on contact with the pit entry wall.

Such was the impact, that the barriers were dislodged, causing a red flag.

Stewards handed Winterbottom drive-through penalty for reckless driving.

Brown, meanwhile, was winded by the impact; he visited the medical centre and was discharged shortly afterwards.

Brown spoke on the broadcast during the race, with judicial footage from Brown’s car.

Winterbottom spoke after the race, and stated the incident wasn’t intentional.

The Team 18 driver went to the Erebus garage after those comments, and confronted Brown and Erebus CEO Barry Ryan.

Brown said the garage run-in, which was captured on the broadcast, should have been avoided.

“I think so,” Brown told Supercars’ Cool Down Lap podcast when asked if the matter with Winterbottom had been put to bed.

“Mark admitted that he pretty much he did it because of the corner before.

“It was a slight touch from me, which was normal racing. He pretty much admitted to putting me off into the fence.

“It’s a 56g impact, somebody could’ve been hurt. I’m all for hard racing, but I wouldn’t do that to someone.

“I wasn’t very happy when he wasn’t apologetic at all when he walked in.

“He said, ‘It’s good to see that you’re okay’. He wasn’t sorry.

“He really didn’t apologise in any way when he came in.”

“It shouldn’t have happened, what happened in the garage… me and Mark went our own ways."

Ryan told Supercars.com he had informed Team 18 not to send Winterbottom to the Erebus garage.

"I’d already told his team managers, tell him not to come down because we can see what he did,” Ryan said.

Winterbottom: 'Doesn't show getting drilled'

"Then he admitted on TV in his interview, that it was almost payback for what Will did to him at the hairpin at 60km/h where no one gets hurt.

"We didn't want to see him, but he came into the garage… then we basically said, ‘Go away, we won't talk to you’.

"Then he tried to apologise and it was a half-arsed apology."

When asked how Brown replied, Ryan said: “I know what you did… 100 per cent you did it on purpose.

“Mark didn't want to admit that, but he didn't really want to apologise either.”

Beyond the run-in, Erebus is now facing a race against time to repair the car.

The team will also run a Bathurst wildcard for Greg Murphy and Richie Stanaway.

However, should Brown be forced to revert to the spare chassis, Erebus will need to find another car for the wildcard.

Ryan ruled out using a chassis from another team; Boost Mobile founder Peter Adderton later suggested the wildcard could be run by another team.

Erebus is also building Gen3 chassis, having recently completed its first car.

On the situation, Brown said: “Obviously the wildcard car is our spare car.

“We turned a car around between Bathurst and Gold Coast a few years ago.

“Who knows what the guys and girls can do here.

“The hardest thing is you’re adding in the Gen3 battle of building chassis.

“The fabricator’s currently building the Gen3 chassis.

“To throw this in there is not an easy thing to do."
