An overwhelmed Zak Best was left speechless after scoring a shock pole at the OTR SuperSprint.

Tickford Racing wildcard Best pipped Shane van Gisbergen, no less, to Race 20 pole.

Best’s ARMOR ALL Pole Position is the Ford Mustang’s 11th in 12 attempts at The Bend.

Of all Ford drivers to continue the Mustang’s streak, Best is the youngest and least experienced.

The Benalla native, who will turn 21 in October, is making just his second solo appearance.

Best only made his main game debut at last year’s Repco Bathurst 1000.

The Victorian vowed pre-event to get his elbows out, having been muscled by the established drivers in Darwin.

However, he has potential to avoid all drivers, given he will start from the best position for Race 21.

"I wasn’t expecting this," Best said.

"I don't really know what to say. We did the best we could.

"Had a big go into Turn 1, we were losing a bit to Cam [Waters].

"Had a look, pieced it all together finally and it was good enough for pole."

Best races for Tickford in the Dunlop Series, and led the standings after the Sydney season-opener.

After a torrid round in Perth, he returned to form and scored pole in Townsville.

That weekend, he battled to get off the line and was unable to convert to victory.

In what will be just his fifth Supercars race, Best is determined to convert his starting position to a Turn 1 lead.

"Racing’s a completely different thing," he said.

"We’ve got to get off the line, then try and stay out of trouble.

"It’ll all sort itself out. I’m a bit overwhelmed. Didn’t expect to see all these cameras at this end of pit lane.

"It’s so surreal, I don’t know what to say."

The 24-lap Race 21 will commence at 4:15pm local time.
