Cam Waters and Shane van Gisbergen were twice separated by 0.4s in races at Winton.

However, Sunday's first ARMOR ALL Qualifying session at the Pizza Hut Winton SuperSprint was even closer.

Waters pipped van Gisbergen to Race 14 pole by the barest of margins.

All told, after 10 minutes of qualifying, the two drivers were split by just 0.0006s.

That equates to 30 millimetres on track, a remarkable margin considering the circuit is 3000 metres long.

As stated by V8 Sleuth, all events since 1988 have been timed to more than one decimal place.

In that period, only one margin between first and second has been closer.

At Hidden Valley Raceway 12 years ago, Alex Davison beat Jamie Whincup to pole by 0.0002s.

For reference, the closest Bathurst pole-winning margin was 0.0012s, Steven Richards beating Jason Bright.

Van Gisbergen would go on to win the race despite being pipped to pole.

Waters later converted his Race 15 pole to victory, but questions still arrived about that tiny qualifying margin.

Waters was 0.0515s quicker in the first sector; van Gisbergen was 0.0645s quicker in the second.

Heading into the final sector, van Gisbergen held the upper hand by just 0.0130s.

Waters went 0.0136s quicker in the final sector, and there is your 0.0006s.

"Not really," Waters replied when asked if he believed the margin.

"I was just happy I was on the right side of it."

Van Gisbergen added: "You can't really complain about parity, can ya?

"It was awesome... it's good to push each other and go better and better."
