About half-way through the ride day program at Lakeside in Queensland, Marcos Ambrose is getting used to his new generation Ford Falcon FG and said the day couldn't be going any better.

Unveiled this morning, the XBox-sponsored FG has been tearing around the 2.41km circuit as Ambrose and the team settle in before the December 5-7 Sydney NRMA 500.

The critical factor for Ambrose so far has been the heat, with no cool suit option during a ride day, as a passenger seat is fit in the car.

"It's hot - we haven't got any A/C unit going in there - it's just me in the sweat box! I wanted to see how hot they are, and they certainly are hot," Ambrose told v8supercars.com.au.

"Hotter than when I left them - I think the engine being so far back, gets a lot of heat through your cabin there.

"The handling's good - I'm still not committed yet, but I'm building up to it. Still can't quite get through that last corner like I want to, but I'm getting there."

When asked the trickiest thing about being back in the V8 Supercar, Ambrose said his focus was just on keeping it clean. He has not driven a V8 Supercar at the circuit before and obviously hasn't been behind the wheel of one of the beasts since 2005 at Phillip Island.

"I just don't want make a mistake, you know. We've put a lot of effort in and done a lot of hours to get here, so I just don't want to make a meal of it and stick it in the fence," Ambrose said.

More than anything, he's looking forward to giving it that red hot go, once he is entirely comfortable.

"It's going well, today is going as good as we could have hoped."

Fans turned out in droves at Lakeside this morning to catch a glimpse of the two-time Champ and NASCAR hero, as well as the bright green rocket powering around for the first time.

"I wasn't expecting to see that many people out here, it's great they've come out to say hello ... it's pretty humbling actually.

"I just wanted to go over there and thank them. I guess my time away has been long and I kind of thought I'd been forgotten about - but I guess I haven't!"
