Brodie Kostecki details retaliation in wild Cam Waters battle
Ford stars went head-to-head in dramatic Ipswich fight
Waters came off second best after initial run-in through Turn 3
Brodie Kostecki and Cam Waters talked through a lively battle in the Ipswich opener that saw the latter come off second best.
Disputing eighth on the opening lap in Race 23, Kostecki escorted Waters onto the wet ripple strip at Turn 5, before the Monster Energy Ford hit oil and ran into the Turn 6 gravel.
It came after Waters escorted Kostecki onto the grass exiting Turn 3, with the Shell V-Power Ford surviving the hairy off to run line astern down to Turn 4.
Waters locked up as Kostecki got down the inside, and as they rounded Turn 5, the Dick Johnson Racing driver got his revenge.
“I had pretty good battles all weekend,” Kostecki said on his Lucky Dogs podcast.
"Cam in the first race on Saturday ran me off at Turn 3 on the exit… he just went full throttle, just on a 45-degree angle, ran me out to the grass.
“I kept it full throttle and I somehow went through the grass like Dukes of Hazzard right next to him, and come out next to him, and he must have been shitting himself.
“We went side-by-side through Turn 4, because it was wet, ‘I'm going to wait until Turn 5 exit and put him on the exit kerb and really f**k his race'. I put him on the exit kerb at 5 and he went back to dead last."
Kostecki and Waters spoke through the run-ins after the race, with Waters claiming Kostecki ran him off the road. In response, Kostecki insisted Waters did it first.
Given the nature of Kostecki’s off, Waters didn’t believe his rival would pop out still alongside him.
“I spoke to him afterwards, and he goes, ‘Mate, you f**king ran me off’," Kostecki recounted.
“I said, 'You ran me off at Turn 3’. He goes, ’To be honest, I didn’t expect you to still be there’.”
Waters recovered to 17th, with Kostecki fifth. Waters rounded out the weekend with finishes of fifth and second, with Kostecki 24th and fifth after a lap 1 incident in the second race.
