Andre Heimgartner backs Declan Fraser in push for Supercars return
Heimgartner, Fraser will pair up for upcoming Ryco Enduro Cup rounds
2022 Super2 champion Fraser has made no secret of returning full-time
Andre Heimgartner believes co-driver Declan Fraser would make a “good run” at Supercars should he get the right chance.
Heimgartner and Fraser will pair up for the upcoming Ryco Enduro Cup rounds at The Bend and Bathurst in coming weeks for Brad Jones Racing.
Fraser, the 2022 Super2 champion, has made no secret of his ambition to return to Supercars full-time after a tough season in 2023.
The Queenslander steered a fourth Tickford Racing Mustang to little success in 2023, and after departing the team, was quickly snapped up by BJR.
While the enduros didn’t go their way, Fraser showed impressive pace at Sandown and Bathurst, and has kept busy this year.
Notably, he briefly raced a Volante Rosso Motorsport-run Aston Martin in GT World Challenge Australia, and made a winning Toyota 86 cameo in Townsville.
There are potential opportunities in the silly season, with potential vacancies at the likes of Team 18, Matt Stone Racing, PremiAir Racing and the Blanchard Racing Team.
When asked if Fraser has what it takes in Supercars, Heimgartner told Supercars.com: "He's one of the best co-drivers out there, it's no secret.
"To be able to utilise him to get some good results is what we're looking for. So, that's our aim this year.
"We definitely got hamstrung last year with the fuel thing and then there were no Safety Cars that allowed us to get back in the action.
“He is a good little steerer and no doubt, if he was given the proper opportunity in Supercars, he'd make a good run at it.”
Fraser settled in with a big day in Heimgartner’s #8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet Camaro at the pre-enduro test day at Queensland Raceway last week.
The duo logged 154 laps on the day, with Heimgartner happy with where his co-driver sat by day’s end.
"He's always a good operator, and we had no dramas with him,” Heimgartner said.
"He fits in very well, which is nice. He did some good solid laps and by the end of the day, he felt he was there and thereabouts where he needed to be.
"I think it was a great opportunity for him to get the iron out after a long time not driving."
Tickets for the AirTouch 500 at The Bend on September 9-12, and the Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 9-12, are on sale now.
