Lundgaard has been on a sharp rise towards the pinnacle of world motorsport as a long-time Renault Sport F1 Academy junior.

The 18-year-old won a pair of Formula 4 championships in 2017 and was runner-up in the 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup before making an impression in Formula 3 last year.

A strong campaign at the third-tier level paved the way for him to debut in Formula 2 at Abu Dhabi late last year; he is due to contest the full F2 season for ART Grand Prix in 2020.

During the COVID-19 break, Lundgaard has represented the Renault DP World F1 Team in Formula 1’s own Eseries, including acting as teammate to Andre Heimgartner when the latter made a cameo appearance in April.

Lundgaard will now be the one stepping slightly out of his comfort zone, driving a third Kelly Racing Ford Mustang – alongside Heimgartner and Rick Kelly – with Castrol and BP backing.

He will compete from the Renault team’s UK headquarters at Enstone.

“I’m very much looking forward to this opportunity and having a go at something which is completely new to me,” Lundgaard said.

“I’d like to say a huge thanks to Renault DP World F1 Team, Castrol, BP, Kelly Racing and Supercars for making it happen.

"As always, I’ll do my best and take it step by step.

“We don’t do racing if we’re not going to try and win, so I’ll try my best to win but at the same time have as much fun as possible and look to learn a few bits and pieces along the way.”

Round 9 action will take place tomorrow night at Michigan International Speedway, with a driver vote to determine a possible second venue.
