Webb non-committal on enduro drive

Reigning Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winning co-driver Jonathon Webb remains non-committal over his place alongside Will Davison in this year’s Pirtek Enduro Cup.

The 33-year-old Tekno Autosports team owner returned to the wheel of the squad’s #19 Holden at Queensland Raceway last Friday for the additional driver practice session.

It marked just the second time Webb has been in the car since October following a handful of laps at a team test day in early June.

Keeping a low profile this season, Webb is not racing full-time in any category and elected against defending his Bathurst 12 Hour crown in February.

Batting away questions at Ipswich over whether he will return for the Pirtek Enduro Cup, Webb said that there’s “plenty of time” to make the decision.

Regardless, multiple sources in and close to the team told Supercars.com that they fully expect he will race, with no alternatives having been sought.

The remainder of the grid is almost set with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport the only other team yet to make its plans official.

LDM is however close to confirming Alex Davison, who would have been a logical substitute for Webb if one was required.

Webb was 19th on the timesheets at the end of Friday’s Ipswich practice session – a result that the team described as a solid effort considering the age of the tyres at his disposal.

"It was good to get back in the car, (it) feels like it's been forever since I drove the thing,” he said after the run.

“(I) did a few laps and tried to remember where everything went and changed a couple of things in the car as far as ergonomics and a few other bits and pieces since I drove it last.”

Last week also saw Webb take part in a rigorous day of karting alongside fellow drivers including Will and Alex Davison and Jamie Whincup.

Webb has 11 Bathurst 1000 starts to his name, running as a full-time driver in the championship from 2010-2013.

The last driver not to defend their Bathurst crown was Paul Morris, who called time on his 22-start Great Race career after tasting victory alongside Chaz Mostert in 2014.

Tekno has returned to Ipswich today for a ride day following a rough event for Davison that saw a suspected mechanical issue cause two tyre failures in Sunday’s race.
