On the last day of his full-time V8 Supercars driving career a delighted David Wall has qualified for his first ever ARMOR ALL Top 10 Shootout.

The Wilson Security GRM driver set the ninth fastest time in this afternoon’s 20-minute qualifying session for the 250km mini-marathon at the Coates Hire Sydney 500, ensuring two Volvo S60s will take part in the shootout after team-mate Scott McLaughlin set second fastest time.

Wall will revert to co-driving in the Pirtek Enduro Cup for Volvo next season after a disappointing year. The Sydney driver’s full-time place in the team will be taken by James Moffat.

“I never lost faith in myself,” Wall told v8supercars.com.au. “My engineer and I have charted our own course on set-up the last few races and that has started to pay off.

“I wish we had started doing that sooner, but you live and learn.

“I am just rapt. I always felt we were capable of doing this and be able to finally do it is good.”

Wall has qualified in the top 10 for V8 Supercars before but only on Saturdays when there was no top 10 shootout.

“So to do shootout is going to be great, although I will have to ask Scott what I have to do.”

This afternoon’s shootout will determine the top 10 grid positions for this afternoon’s final 250km mini-marathon at the Coates Hire Sydney 500. But Wall said his day was already on a high after qualifying.

“Whatever happens for the rest of the day will be, but to make the shootout is great for the team.”

Wall stressed his decision to step back from full-time driving in 2016 did not mean he had ended ambitions to one day return to the category full-time.

“I will never say I am never coming back, but for now I think my opportunity is to try and get a good endurance drive and do some other racing during the year that I really enjoy.

“Hopefully we can finish the year on a high. It’s a home race for (sponsor) Payce and I have family and friends here so we will see what we can do in the shootout. We will have a big go.”
