Jamie Whincup came home 12th while Championship competitor Mark Winterbottom was 18th.

The session saw drivers pushing the track limits, with tyre bundles installed this year instead of the 90-degree kerbs used last year to limit kerb hopping throughturns 1, 9 and 10.

A number of drivers including Lowndes, both Todd and Rick Kelly, David Wall, Mostert, Dale Wood and Lee Holdsworth, paid a one-minute penalty in pit lane after pushing over the allowed kerb hops in the session.

The next session, which kicks off at 11.55am local time, is specifically for co-drivers.
