Scott Pye is keen to help push DJR Team Penske forward this weekend, as he returns to the cockpit of a V8 Supercar.

The 25-year old will jump in and drive the #17 Falcon FG X after Marcos Ambrose's shock step down and is hoping his contribution not only helps improve the car, but nabs a good result for the team.

Pye - who drove for the team last year, before it downgraded to run a single car and amalgamated into DJR Team Penske - was respectful of Ambrose's decision and is more than happy to play his part this weekend, and for as long as Ambrose needs.

"I think it's admirable, what he's done as a driver, to step aside and do what he thinks is going to speed the process up," Pye told v8supercars.com.au.

"I hope it does - if it does, it means I've done my job and that's what I'd like to do, I'd like to help the team and Marcos as much as possible."

While he admitted it was difficult to be left sidelined at the end of last season, the young driverbelieves his time out of the car has helped him develop - perhaps it will be the same for Ambrose.

"Sometimes you need to step back to move forward," he said.

"I've learnt a lot from him and this weekend, hopefully we can both learn as I drive the car."

While Pye has been privy to Ambrose's feedback and work with engineer Mark Fenning across this year's three events, without getting behind the wheel, he hasn't been able to help solve any issues.

"I've been listening, trying to learn as much as I can and his feedback, what he feels the car's doing. I know he's said the feel is something he struggles with," Pye said.

"It's going to be cool to discuss the car with him and how the balance has shifted from last year, because that's what's really been the hard part ... I've been to the rounds, but haven't been able to contribute anything because I haven't driven the car yet - so really excited to get to drive it."

Though the Sydney NRMA 500 last year was his final race as a full-timer, it was also a strong showing for Pye at an event that the American contingent was watching.

Landing in the ARMOR ALL Top 10 Shootout was something he believed impressed Ambrose and helped provePye had a lot to offer the team.

"I felt like at the end of last year I was the best I'd ever felt in the car, I really started to feel like it had become second nature and I don't think it'll be too far away from that," he said of this weekend.

And although it's been four months since he was last behind the wheel, there's a bit of confidence he can get the car back towards the top five, where it featured occasionally in 2014.

"I really want to do a good job for everyone involved, especially for me.

"I want to spray some champagne, it's been a long time and I think the team, the morale is really good. Everyone's walking around with smiles on their faces ... it's pretty exciting times - it's a good opportunity for me, one I'll grab with both hands and do the best job I can."

This weekend, the main aim is to get in as many laps as possible, keep it clean and focus on pinpointing the issues with the Falcon.

"It's so hard to expect something in this championship because the competition is so high level," he said when asked about expectations for the weekend.

"The goal this weekend is to finish every session, do as many laps as possible, develop the car and find a direction with it - but of course I'm a racer, and I'm competitive, so I want to be at the front.

"So I'll be doing everything I can, pushing hard, and hopefully I'll be at the front."
