Scott McLaughlin has trumped a quick Jamie Whincup for ARMOR ALL Pole Position for today's second 60 kilometre sprint at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint.
Whincup seemed to have had secured the P1 startwhen the chequered flag dropped, but was pushed back to second when McLaughlin recorded a 1min30.753 around the fast Phillip Island circuit in the dying stages of the session.
Only 0.0898 seconds separated Whincup from McLaughlin, who have both secured their fifth ARMOR ALL Pole Positions of 2015 today, with Whincup taking the first grid spot for the first race this afternoon.
"Smashed by a tenth in the last corner, I don't know how," Whincup said after the session.
"We'll reassess and hopefully have a good race car this afternoon."
Whincup's Red Bull stablemate Craig Lowndes will start the race in third, lining up alongside championship rival Mark Winterbottom in fourth.
David Reynolds was fifth quickest, ahead of Scott Pye and Michael Caruso, who were sixth and seventh respectively.
DJR Team Penske's Scott Pye continued his strong form into the second qualifying session to secure the fifth grid spot, ahead of Michael Caruso in sixth.
Caruso's team boss Rick Kelly trailed him in eighth, followed by James Courtney and Fabian Coulthard, who rounded out the top ten.
Shane van Gibsergen was just outside the top ten in 11th, while Garth Tander was further back in the pack in 15th.
The V8 Supercars will return to the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit for the first 60 kilometre sprint at 3.10pm, before they take these grid spots for the second race of the day at 4.55pm.
