Erebus Motorsport's star driver Will Davison has continued to show speed at Symmons Plains, topping the day's opening 15-minute practice session.

Davison featured in the top two in both hour-long runs yesterday, and this time last year recorded what was Erebus' best race result at that time - fourth on Sunday.

He's started the day in the best possible way, topping practice, with back-to-back qualifying on the horizon.

"It's been a good start, we've got to carry this into qualifying," Davison said.

"That's the first time I've put on a good quality hard tyre - we were good on used hard tyres yesterday."

Carrying some confidence into qualifying is important for the former Championship runner-up, who recorded ARMOR ALL Pole Position last year at the Sydney 500.

"Pretty good signs, I didn't have a tow or anyone in front of me... I thought that would cost me, but still up there," he said.

"I'm pleasantly surprised, but now I'm wound up, I've got a sniff of a result. It's a cruel game though, you have to have your A-game."

The gap to second placed Craig Lowndes was just 0.1067sec, with Shane van Gisbergen third and 0.1366sec adrift.

After an engine change overnight, Nick Percat featured fourth, with Dale Wood, Jamie Whincup, David Reynolds, Mark Winterbottom, Ash Walsh, and Fabian Coulthard top 10.

The result from Walsh means both Erebus cars featured in the top 10.

Others to note include Scott McLaughlin 14th, Chaz Mostert 16, and Scott Pye 19 in the DJR Team Penske Falcon.

Again there were a number of off-track excursions from drivers as they look for the limits at the tight Symmons Plains circuit.

Stay tuned for back-to-back qualifying at 12.55pm local time, with two 60km races to follow.
