Jamie Whincup's Bathurst campaign has become a lot more difficult after hitting the wall at the Cutting and ending his chance of qualifying up the front.

With 23 minutes to go in the 40-minute qualifying session at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the Championship leader hit his Red Bull Commodore hard when pushing to jump up from 25th position.

Now, he will start from the back of the field on Sunday -along with yesterday's fastest man David Reynolds, who had a heavy shunt at McPhillamy Park earlier in the session.

Both the Red Bull and The Bottle-O crews will have to work hard to have the V8 Supercars repaired for Sunday.

"We haven't had a good weekend so far, or a good and consistent car," Red Bull team boss Mark Dutton said.

"The boys did a good job overnight giving him a better car - we thought we had a good chance to do a better job today... It'll be an early day tomorrow not doing the top 10, we'll have extra time making sure prep is ready for a good race on Sunday."

The grid will be set for positions 11-26, with the top 10 to be determined by tomorrow evening's ARMOR ALL Top 10 Shootout.

More to come.
