'Average' weekend damages Reynolds' top 10 hopes

Few drivers suffered more at the OTR SuperSprint than David Reynolds, who dropped six places in the championship standings.

The Kelly Grove Racing recruit arrived at The Bend Motorsport Park seventh overall, having retained his top 10 spot following a mixed bag of results in Tasmania.

Reynolds, who clinched a podium at Sandown in his 350th race start, was only good enough for finishes of 22nd and 12th on Sunday, a day after recording a DNF.

The Saturday non-finish came after Reynolds made contact with Tim Slade mid-race, damaging the #26 Penrite Mustang enough to put it in the garage.

The seven-time race winner qualified eighth for Sunday’s first race and made up places off the line, only to be caught up in the Turns 5-6 incident which wiped out Cameron Waters and Chaz Mostert.

A bent steering arm was the result fo Reynolds, with the lengthy stop forcing him down the order.

Starting 20th for the finale, the 35-year-old recovered to 12th, but it wasn’t good enough to avoid a weekend without a top 10 finish.

"It was a very average weekend,” said Reynolds, who slumped to 13th in the standings, having led the tight midfield pack after Tasmania.

"I had some high hopes coming here.

"The car we have is one of the better cars I’ve driven this track with and I just couldn’t make a result out of it, because of some factors unknown and probably a few things I also need to work on.

"So, the next one is Winton, we should go a bit better there as we know the track fairly well.”.

Reynolds’ Saturday DNF was a bittersweet outcome for KGR, which helped Andre Heimgartner to his maiden race win.

Heimgartner survived a time penalty for a pit lane infringement to take a dominant victory, which was the first of the Kelly Grove era.

“[Andre] had an unbelievable day. Pole and win,” Reynolds said after Saturday’s race.

"To take his first win is incredible. It shows the team is heading in the right direction and will be in good spirits.”.

The Repco Supercars Championship field will return to Victoria for the Winton SuperSprint across May 29-30. Tickets are available here.
