Boys, who drives for Image Racing and is part of the Erebus Academy, started his night well by coming through the qualifying duels to put his #49 ZB Commodore 10th on the grid.

From there he moved forward to fifth in the opening sprint, recovered to 16th in the reverse grid affair and then snatched a podium in the final race, behind Scott McLaughlin and Jack Le Brocq.

He joins Broc Feeney and Brodie Kostecki as Super2 drivers to have managed a top three placing amongst the virtual main game field.

Boys, who won two second-tier races last year and was hunting a 2020 co-drive, was surprised by his success.

“That podium was unexpected. It was really cool,” he said.

“We probably put a bit too much fuel in at the pitstop but overall, it was good fun and I’m surprised at how well we went because I hadn’t raced on an oval track before.

“I hadn’t really done much iRacing before. I’ve had the sim for about three weeks and I’ve used the Erebus Motorsport sim about three or four times so I haven’t had much experience, but I had been spending as much time on it as I could the past few weeks.”

Boys practised with Erebus drivers Anton De Pasquale and David Reynolds during the week and the trio worked together in qualifying, offering one another a tow around the Michigan oval.

“I raced against Anton in go-karts a bit and with Dave being from Albury as well, we have a bit of a link with the families, so I have spent a bit of time around them over the years,” said Boys.

“It was good to be able to work with them on this. They have helped me out at the Erebus Academy and test days when they can, so to have that extra resource to lean on has been really handy.”

Over at Kelly Racing, Renault F1 protégé Christian Lundgaard failed to record a top 20 finish but enjoyed his outing in the #98 Ford Mustang.

"I had a lot of fun last night in the Castrol BP Supercar, it's such a nice car to drive and everyone is super competitive,” he said.

“The oval track probably didn't suit me too well as I did most of my practice on traditional circuits, but had a lot of fun anyway.

"I felt like I was fairly competitive albeit with a few incidents that knocked me down the order.

“The oval tracks are definitely pretty crazy and takes a lot of skill to be fast."

Fellow wildcards Michael Caruso and ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett didn’t fare much better; Aaron Seton did though, taking ninth in the first race.

Wildcards for next week’s 10th and final round of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries are to be announced.
